I was not some spoilt toffee nosed private school kid that went every year. No this was my first business trip to attend a conference at Shandrani, you have to admit it was a cool first business trip. My job was to try a convince, connive, beg borrow or steal & get Travel agents to use American express cards as their card of choice when it came to customers. The event was the annual ASATA Congress, the year was 1997. Naturally being cheap & nasty I had to share a room with my boss! He found it interesting to say the least. Now me being of party mind & him being of conservative nature made for interesting bed fellows. In hindsight it worked well as we both felt that we had our own rooms, He was early to bed & early to rise whilst I was naturally trying my hardest to network with my customers and as a result was late to bed & late to rise. This was also where I discovered my love for the local amber nectar - Phoenix. It is a love that has lasted to this day & perhaps it is the magical surroundings or just the taste but the ultimate experience is delicious.
Anyway I digress; the congress was a great success & Shandrani an awesome 5 star hotel. People loved the venue, they got into the swing of things & the people of Mauritius put up a show that had to be seen to be believed. I had a bit of a mishap on the Catamaran on our day off as nobody told me how strong the Rum Punch was & I was a jibbering wreck for most of that night. Naturally my boss thought that I was a misguided soul & prayed for my redemption after having witnessed a man on a mission for 5 days. Whatever it was I was taken with the destination, from the friendly people to the outstanding resorts, the cuisine & naturally the Phoenix. This was the start of a love affair that was to last a lifetime, since then I have been back every year at least once. Just to make sure that it is as I remember it - World Class.
Your beachtag bonus: Shandrani is known as the ‘Playground of Kings" and is now one of the few FULLY inclusive Resorts in Mauritius. It is a must for couples, families and groups - a magical playground.
